As I go further south the scenery gets more rocky and more impressive, right to the border with Spain as it happens.
Now the guide shows no campsites in Sigean but in fact there are two; a municipal one on the beach and a private one in the town. Again the town is inland slightly! Both campsites are very cheap – I guess the tiny town of Sigean isn’t a popular spot.
Campsite costs
Now this is another curious business. Campsite costs can vary considerably from 6 euro / night to 50 euro / night and it’s very difficult to pin down what makes the difference. For sure a 5 star (holiday camp style) in a popular place on the beach is going to be very expensive, but then there are exceptions, the place I just spent 10 days in at Narbonne plage for instance. Some of the nicest places are the cheapest and some of the grottiest the most expensive. Often there is little rhyme or reason.
See food... an eat it
So I drove down to a cheap looking restaurant on the beach. I was looking to try something I never had before. Eating in France I found has given me a renewed sense of gastronomic adventure since I never ate anything in France I didn’t like (except Andouille... which is tripe sausages!... and that was a mistake!). Since this is a working port it had to be something fishy... I found it; cuttlefish and chips. You know those hard boney things that get washed up on the beaches in England that you give to your budgy? Thats the bone in the head bit of the fish, the rest of it is very much like squid. White, chewy and delicious! Especially in garlicy sauce. The chips were burnt but the rest was great. Now this came to 15 euros with half a pint of beer (un petit pression) ... food is never cheap in France, but always delicious!
After I drove back into town, sorted some business out at the post office (why is it nothing I post in France seems to arrive?) and went to the campsite in town. Today the Mistral is by far the strongest I’ve seen it and I struggled for half an hour to get the camper put up. Once it was up though it was great. Again it was rock solid, I have no reservations any more about the strength of the frame. With the back door open the wind would blow in and the thing would inflate like a balloon. It was great, it help keep me cool at night. The frame however was solid! So I sat there in my new office environment and got some work done.

Oh I also found a Lidl’s so I bought 2 huge boxes of stinky chip juice (32 litres) and bunged it in my tank. I don’t half get some funny looks from people standing there tipping bottle after bottle straight into the tank. In fact it was while waving to the horrified cashiers while filling up at the Lidl’s in Rodez it occurred to me... am I eccentric? On reflection I think no... maybe everyone else is just a little dull that’s all.
