It was raining constantly all night and still is. Fortunately the camper is warm and waterproof if not bug proof. The fire helped. I only put a handful of charcoal on but it stayed hot for about 6 hours overnight.
Due to the relentless rain it seems a good day to get the diary online. I set the table up in the space provided within the canvas at the back of the Landrover so I could work while staying warm and dry. Made proper coffee :-) After doing that I’ll probably go explore the town.
Something just went ‘ping’ within the canvas structure... :-( I located the problem and fixed it temporarily. It was the wooden knob on one of my upright posts that hold the roof up. It snapped off! Should be fine till I get home.
I explored the town this afternoon... in the sodden rain. I’m sure the French don’t build ugly towns. Although not in the same league as Auxerre this one would still put the finest of our medieval towns to shame. At one point the rain turned into a deluge for about 3 hours. Despite finding refuge in several bars on my way back to camp. I got drenched. Everything in my bag and my trousers was soaked as if I’d jumped in the mighty Loire! Which thinking about it is rising fast and the campsite is all of about 2 metres above it!
When I got back I had to light the fire again. This is time out of pure necessity. By raising the temperature inside it drives out the humidity (according to weather station). Its still 16 deg outside but a roasting 24 inside. However the humidity has dropped from 96% outside to 68% inside. I’ve also realised that by turning around the fan so it blows out the window it not only acts as a very effective extractor fan for the cooking but also removes the warm moist air from my drying clothes inside.
I would very much like to move on now but don’t want to fold up the camper until its had time to dry out and they’re not forecasting a break in the weather for 3 days!!!
Oh and thanks to everyone at Justgiving for the camera. Most of these pics were taken using my leaving present!
