Day 6 – To Chennoncaux

Had breakfast early. Washed dishes. Proper coffee from the caffetierre ;-) These little luxuries mean so much more away from home! Packed up the Landrover and was on the road again. Fantastic feeling that... sun shining, up early, great night’s sleep, nowhere in particular to head for, although Sean recommended a place called Chennoncaux about a few hours’ drive which fitted in well with my overall plans.

Ran out of stinking old chip fat just short of Tours so had to fill up with real genuine diesel from a ‘station de service’ (pronounced stay-cyon d’servees). It cost me nearly 60 Euros!!! The reason I use recycled oil isn’t the cost, but the benefit to the environment (veg oil is a closed carbon cycle plus its recycling waste oil which is hazardous if dumped). However with equation 1 in mind it has new significance. Anyway 60 Euros is ok as long as I make it last a few days. Still it pales in comparison to the 5 euro equivalent I give the kebab shop owner back home.
Made it to Chennoncaux, a small village outside Tours. Found the small municipal campsite. There appears to be lots of tourists for a small place. I suspect on account of the grand chateau. I will investigate in the morning.

David and Lyn

The only other people on the campsite are a charming retired English couple from Kent that moved to France 12 years ago. They live on the coast but travel around in their motor home. ‘Ello!’ they said, then he pointed to my Landrover and said ‘I used to ave one a them’. Everyone is interested in my unusual camper configuration. Once I set up camp under some trees (for shade) Lyn came walking over with a nice cold beer! I had some beers in the bottom of my fridge but until I saw that condensation covered green frosty bottle glinting in the intense sunshine I didn’t realise just how much I needed a beer.

David was really into free energy having just installed a log burner in his house and a bore hole for free water to feed his garden. He could talk all day about it... I was hungry and wanted to use up the last of my scraps of food from my fridge in England. I made a fantasic veggy, spicy, herby, spag boll - I ran out of meat - but was delicious non the less. David and Lyn left me their address so I can pop in and see them on the way home. May just do in a couple of months.
